A base-case projection, not a measured outcome. Growing infrastructure creates real challenges, particularly in water-stressed regions.
These figures measure different things: one specific AI service's estimated per-prompt use versus the global footprint of all data centers. They are not directly comparable. “Water consumed” is also different from “water withdrawn.”
Does every AI question use a bottle of water?
No. A frequently cited older estimate of a 500 mL bottle for roughly 10–50 responses was based on a particular model, workload, and infrastructure assumptions. Google's more recent estimate for its median Gemini text prompt is much lower, but excludes some indirect water impacts. Neither number describes every model or every prompt.
Why can two studies give such different answers?
Model size, prompt length, data-center location, climate, cooling method, electricity source, and what researchers count all change the answer. A peer-reviewed 2025 assessment found workload-level water-use estimates can differ by more than 10,000-fold across conditions.
So is AI's environmental impact insignificant?
No. Large data centers can consume substantial amounts of water, and local impacts matter—especially in dry regions. Efficiency improvements per query don't necessarily offset growing overall demand. Responsible adoption means measuring the full footprint, demanding transparency, and choosing efficient infrastructure.
Our position: Use AI intentionally. Measure its impact honestly. Improve the technology rather than pretending the trade-offs don't exist.
